Two weeks in India – from Mumbai on the Arabian Sea to Chennai on the Bay of Bengal – but right in the middle was the main reason for the trip…
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway – built between 1891 and 1899 and still running under steam from Mettupalayam to Coonoor en-route to Udhagamandalam (Ooty, always Ooty).
It takes nearly five hours to travel the full 46 km with gradients of upto 1 in 12; 16 tunnels and 250 bridges and a UNESCO recognised heritage site.
What’s not to like..?
