I’ve always wanted to photograph a puffin, only a foot tall and full of character, not least those big orange feet and matching beak – but I always thought I’d need to go all the way to the Welsh Atlantic coast and get a boat out to the islands. However, pretty much accidentally, I found out that they nest at the RSPB’s Bempton Cliffs on Yorkshire’s east coast – and I wasn’t going to be far away.
Well there were puffins; but too far away and only standing around, not flying off to see how many fish they could cram into their beaks. So, the puffin picture needs to wait for another day; here’s one of a gannet – Britain’s largest sea bird, with a wingspan of six feet (this one’s not quite fully grown), you don’t really want one of these trying to steal your chips.
