It’s the Goodwood Road Racing Club Spring Sprint – although renamed the Summer Sprint, we all know what happened to April…
On the starting line is a Maserati Typo 61, as raced by factory driver Stirling Moss and known as the Maserati Birdcage, after its space frame construction of two hundred small-section tubes. This gave the car a significant weight advantage over the competition from Ferrari, Aston Martin and Jaguar as the car dominated the hill climb scene during the early 1960s.
Built to be raced by privateers, this one still is; but unless you’ve got a couple of million quid to spare this 2,890 cc beauty is probably not going to be sitting in your garage – if it was in mine I’m not sure I’d be throwing it round Goodwood’s 2.3 mile circuit in a creditable 123.33 seconds…
That’s a Jaguar Mk II on the track in the background, it’s a contemporary of the Birdcage and is still a looker – but probably a bit more affordable.
