Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb – the oldest motorsport event in the world to still run over its original course; Le Mans, Indianapolis..? Nope, nowhere near. In July it’s Classic Nostalgia, on the track and in the car park.
Never mind the red Ferraris, the Porsche 914s with Volkswagen engines, the single seaters, the Edwardian hill climbers and the ones in lurid colours that look like they were knocked together in someone’s garage – the real cars are the Alfas and the Ford Escorts and Cortinas, just like my Dad had but now with business-like harnesses and exhausts made noisier with straight pipes.
Still now, just as it was then, the Mini is still the best sports car in the world – especially if it’s all you can afford.
